For young learners, there are a plethora of apps out there to help learn how to count, and for older learners, often times a graphing calculator or scientific calculator app will do the trick. But what about all of those students in between?
You know, the ones who already know how to count, but have to learn a multitude of math concepts that most of their parents have long forgotten? We’re taking a look at 6 apps that are easy to use and teach more than just counting.
Geometry
This app allows you to create virtual geometrical shapes using a grid. Different colors represent different shapes, and the tool reinforces the concept of fractions along with geometrical shapes.
Fractions
This app uses everyday items (like a pizza or an apple) to demonstrate and quiz users on fractions. We think it’s great because it is simple to use, practical (because we don’t think you’re going to eat that whole pizza yourself!) and adaptive, so it continues to challenge you as you learn.
Order of Operations
Name That Number is a game based learning tool where players use five number tiles to build number sentences that equal a target number. Players can name the target number by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and/or dividing the numbers using as many tiles as possible. It offers visual and audio guidance as you go.
Estimation
For students who are learning estimation, this app is basically a calculator that you plug your problem into, but it doesn’t give you an answer until you’ve made your estimate. A bar shows you if your estimate is within a reasonable range. This app is really basic, and easy to use.
Graphing, Mean/Median/Mode
A free guide for students new to line graphs, bar graphs, and pie charts. The app gives an easy to understand explanation of each type of chart along with several examples and tutorials for each kind. Also introduces the concepts of mean, median, mode, and trend lines. A good guide for students brand new to these concepts, and a good reference or review for those who have forgotten!
Multiplication
Ghostblasters is a game that enables users to learn (and use) multiplication tables by calculating numbers to zap ghosts! You can choose your factor (ex.5) and will have to select the right ghosts that are multiples of that factor. An easy and fun way to get kids to learn their times tables.
